Luis Enrique’’s boys retain Spanish title as Barcelona pipped bitter rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga title thanks to a Luis Suarez hat-trick at Granada.

At the start of April they were 9 points clear of Real Madrid, but defeat in El Classico on 2 April was the beginning of a major drop in form. Beforehand Barcelona were unbeaten in 39 games at the top of the table and bidding to become the first team to successfully defend the Champions League title.

The team seemed tired as they lost their points advantage and struggled to a defeat at the hands of Simeone’s Atletico Madrid in the two legs of the Champions League quarter-final. Real Madrid rallied late under Zidane and won their last ten league games and almost clawed back the Blaugrana. However, Enrique’s men turned their form around and Luis Suarez scored 40 goals to win the Pichichi top scorer award.

Fourteen of his goals came in the last 5 matches all of which Barca won scoring 24 goals and conceding none Suarez also led the league in assists, tied at 16 with Messi, becoming the first player ever to lead La Liga in both goals and assists.
