Teymuraz Gabashvili upsets home hope Gilles Simon in Marseille Open

Fifth seed Gilles Simon was edged out in front of his home supporters in the first round of the Marseille Open on Tuesday.

Simon started superbly by taking the first set against Russia's Teymuraz Gabashvili, only to fall to a 3-6 6-3 7-6 (9/7) defeat.

Controversial Australian Nick Kyrgios enjoyed a calm 6-4 6-4 win over Vasek Pospisil of Canada to join Gabashvili in round two.

Ernests Gulbis needed three sets to see off Dutch qualifier Kenny De Schepper 6-4 6-7 (7/6) 7-6 (7/2), while Andrey Kuznetsov ousted Frenchman Lucas Pouille 7-6 (7/1) 6-4.

There were also wins for Ukraine's Sergey Stakhovsky, as well as German siblings Mischa Zverev and Alexander Zverev.
