Romanian media outlets have reacted with varying degrees of outrage to Ilie Nastase's Fed Cup antics - not all directed at the man himself.

Prominent Bucharest daily Adevarul was one of the most critical of the two-time grand slam champion, who is still regarded as a superstar in the country.

Its comment read: "The Romanian Tennis Federation has led the Fed Cup team with an individual who at the age of 70 behaves like an uneducated kid."

And the Romanian tennis website Treizecizero also slammed Nastase, calling his comment about Serena Williams "a very disturbed remark that has no place."

The website added: "For many Romanians, such Nastase behaviours are commonplace. For years the former tennis great has filled the pages of newspapers with ridiculous and controversial remarks.

"It has become so familiar that it is no longer (seen as) a scandal and becomes tolerated."

But others sought to steer their frustration in different directions, picking out the British media as the main culprits.

The Romanian sports website Prosport said Nastase has "no excuse" for his "scandalous reactions", but added: "Journalists from (Great Britain) were screaming for a scandal on Friday.

"They have reached their goal, and two uninspired jokes made my Mr Nastase have been taken over as racist and sexist remarks."

Gazeta Sporturilor quoted Steaua Bucharest sporting director Mihai Stoica as saying: "Ilie Nastase is perhaps the most talented sportsman in the history of Romanian sports and it hurts me when a man of such value - because he did nothing - can be attacked."

And Ion Tiriac, a Romanian former player who also managed Boris Becker to his Wimbledon triumphs, told the daily Cotiadianul: "I don't know what Mr Nastase said from the stands, and I don't' care, because the moment he left the playing area he was no longer an official person."
