Barthel and Brengle bow out

Mona Barthel and Madison Brengle were seeded casualties in the first round of the Internationaux de Strasbourg on Sunday.

Eighth seed Barthel was 6-2 5-5 down when she was forced to retire due to a wrist injury against wildcard Virginie Razzano, while seventh-seeded Brengle lost 6-1 6-1 to Ajla Tomljanovic.

American Sloane Stephens booked her place in the second round with a 6-3 6-0 win over qualifier Nadiia Kichenok, with compatriot Shelby Rogers also through after beating Aleksandra Krunic 6-1 6-1.

In the other opening-round matches, Zheng Saisai defeated Hsieh Su-wei 6-4 0-6 6-2, Elena Vesnina was a 6-4 6-2 victor against Gabriela Dabrowski and Lesia Tsurenko edged past Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 7-6 (7/4).
