Chase earns Noble salute as Salford tame Tigers

Brian Noble said Rangi Chase was the star of the show on his comeback for Salford as the New Zealander earned the Red Devils their first win in four Super League games against his former club Castleford.

Chase was back in action after suffering a calf injury on his Salford debut against Wakefield in the first match of the campaign.

But the 27-year-old impressed Red Devils coach Noble after setting up two tries for Andrew Dixon and scoring a late drop-goal to seal a late 23-16 victory over the previously undefeated Tigers.

"Rangi controlled our left side with great discipline," said Noble.

"Some people may have been expecting him to do flash things like make 60-metre dashes but you have to remember he's only played a few minutes this year.

"We should have been further ahead because we bombed a few opportunities, but I'm pleased for the players because a few things have been said.

"We are not out of the woods but will grow from this, beating a confident side who were top of the ladder."

London Broncos' miserable start to the season continued on Friday and their 54-6 defeat at Leeds was compounded by a suspected damaged spleen to Atelea Vea.

Ryan Hall's hat-trick helped Leeds to a comfortable victory at Headingley, with Brad Singleton, Mitch Achurch, Ben Jones-Bishop (2), Zak Hardaker, Kallum Watkins and Rob Burrow also going over for tries.

The Broncos, who have the worst defensive record in the competition having conceded 281 points in six games, did see Mason Caton-Brown cross.

But Broncos boss Tony Rea rued the injury to former St George Illawarra Dragon forward Vea in only his second Super League appearance.

"He's gone to hospital," Rea said. "They're checking on his ribs.

"I'm not really interested in a hollow victory in the second half. We're not kidding ourselves. We don't want pats on the back for being a little bit better than bad.

"We came here to do a job and we didn't do it. I'm really disappointed with what we came up with."

On Thursday, it was a repeat of the 2013 Grand Final and Warrington coach Tony Smith was left disappointed again -- the Australian admitting his side were dreadful in their 12-4 defeat against Wigan Warriors.

Liam Farrell's try and two successful kicks from Matty Smith put reigning champions Warriors 8-0 up at half-time before Blake Green added a second score early in the second period.

Gene Ormsby's interception try was some consolation for the Wolves but Smith -- whose side lost 30-16 to the Warriors in last season's showpiece at Old Trafford - said they had taken a step back from their 28-12 victory over Salford last weekend.

"With the ball we were dreadful, especially in some areas where we were very good at last week," Smith said. "We certainly didn't build on that for this week, that's for sure.

"There were a couple of steps backwards with the ball but a couple of steps forward without it.

"I thought we were probably as physical as we've been for a long time. That was a real positive to take from it."
