Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby was named captain of the Canadian Olympic men's hockey team for next month's Sochi Winter Olympics by Hockey Canada on Sunday.

The 26-year-old National Hockey League superstar scored the gold-medal goal for Canada in overtime four years ago to defeat the United States in the championship game of the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Crosby will serve as Canada's captain for the first time in international play, having been an alternate captain at Vancouver.

Crosby tops NHL individual point producers with 25 goals and 43 assists while the Penguins have the best record in the Eastern Conference with 34 wins and 70 standings points after 48 games.

Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews and Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber were named alternate captains for the Canadian Olympians, who begin Olympic play against Norway on February 13.

"Sidney, Jonathan and Shea have been leaders on the international stage in the past as well as with their NHL teams," Canada coach Mike Babcock said.

"These three players will be at the forefront of our efforts in Sochi but we are confident we have 25 players on our roster that will lead in their own way and allow our team to be successful."
