Ogier seizes command

World championship leader Sebastien Ogier took control on the second day of the German Rally.

French driver Ogier, who has a huge 83-point lead in the championship standings, extended his lead over Volkswagen team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala to 33.8 seconds, with four stages in the Mosel vineyards remaining on Sunday.

Ogier's lead stood at nine seconds as the rally ventured onto the daunting tank training tracks for the first time on Saturday.

But on roads ranging from smooth asphalt to broken concrete and lined by huge kerbstones normally used to keep tanks in line, the Frenchman was supreme.

Ogier won both the 45.61-kilometre test and the preceding two sprint stages to more than double his lead to 18.5 seconds, and his performance on the afternoon pass put even more time between himself and Latvala.

"It was a perfect day," Ogier said. "We made most of the difference in Panzerplatte and that was the key to the rally.

"We had the right set-up and tyre management, but it's never easy without split times because you never know where you are with the rhythm."

Norwegian Andreas Mikkelsen stood in third place, one minutes and 13.7 seconds behind Latvala, to retain Volkswagen's 1-2-3 with the Polo R car on its home event.

Hyundai team-mates Dani Sordo and Thierry Neuville held fourth and fifth places with Welshman Elfyn Evans sixth in his Ford Fiesta RS.
