Defending champion Jonathan Rea extended his lead at the top of the World Superbike Championship with a double win at Misano.

The Northern Irishman won race one on Saturday and followed up with victory over Kawasaki team-mate Tom Sykes once again to stretch his advantage at the top of the standings to 66 points.

Rea tailed Sykes, who took the lead with an ambitious move at turn two on the first lap, for most of the race before pulling away with five laps remaining to eventually win by 2.96 seconds, a more comfortable cushion than the 0.09 secs he won race one by.

Italy's Davide Giugliano, who crashed out in race one, gave home fans something to cheer with a third-place finish.

Althea BMW rider Markus Reiterberger limped away without serious injury after being thrown from his bike in the first lap while Welshman Chaz Davies was forced out after two laps despite remounting after coming into contact with Holland's Michael van der Mark, who went on to finish 10th.

"I'm so happy to have made it a double win here. I learned some things from the race that I didn't see on Saturday and I was able to apply that at the end of the race," Rea said afterwards.

The next round of the series is in the United States at Laguna Seca on July 10.
