Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso topped the timesheet in both free practice sessions ahead of the Italian MotoGP.

The Italian team were always expected to impress at Mugello and did not disappoint the home support.

Dovizioso started impressively in the first session and improved his time in the afternoon by more than four-tenths of a second, setting a best time of one minute 47.479 seconds.

"I am very happy with how this weekend has started for us and above all with the time I set at the end of the session," Dovizioso said. " We are quick and this is fundamental in the search for the best set-up.

"We are still carrying out some tests in order to improve certain aspects of the Desmosedici GP15 that will allow us to be competitive right until the end of the race."

Reigning MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez improved as the day wore on in Italy, with the Repsol Honda man finishing just 0.164secs behind Dovizioso.

Movistar Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo set the third fastest time of the day, fresh from his wins in Jerez and Le Mans.
