Wood takes control against Campillo

England's Chris Wood looked to turn a flying start into a place in the third round of the inaugural Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Matchplay at Murcar Links on Friday.

Wood birdied the first two holes of his last-32 contest against Spain's Jorge Campillo, who beat two-time major winner John Daly in the opening round, and was conceded another when Campillo found trouble on the third.

The players halved the par-five fourth - easily reachable after a change in wind direction - with birdies before Campillo was forced to concede another hole on the fifth, leaving Wood four up and seemingly in command.

Campillo halved his deficit by winning the eighth and ninth with birdies only to drop a shot on the 10th and fall three behind with just eight holes remaining.

Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey had also moved three up on Sweden's Kristoffer Broberg after just five holes, while local favourite Richie Ramsay led Italy's Edoardo Molinari by the same margin after four.

Ramsay had to recover from an early deficit to beat India's Shiv Kapur on Thursday, but won the first hole against Molinari with a par, went two up with a birdie on the third and won the fourth with an eagle.

England's Tyrrell Hatton, who was third in the Omega European Masters on Sunday, had also eagled the fourth to move three up on Sweden's Mikael Lundberg, while tournament host Paul Lawrie and fellow Scot Chris Doak were level after pars on the opening hole.
