What do Manchester United gain with the signing of Angel Di Maria?

Angel Di Maria is an extraordinary Argentinian player who played an important role in his National team’s way to the World Cup final, and also formed part of the magnificent Real Madrid that won the Champions League this year.

Although naturally a winger, Di Maria was used by Carlo Ancelotti as a central midfielder that played an uncommon role, standing near Alonso in the centre of the midfield (forming a trio with Modric), and running from there to attacking positions when his team recovered the ball. Di Maria’s velocity made it possible to quickly advance and be part of almost every attack and counter attack of his team. In Argentina he played wide open once again, and his extraordinary physical capacity helped him to participate in every offensive play his team made, just like he did all season before, playing for Real Madrid.

Di Maria possesses great pace and is a great dribbler who is always destabilizing opposition defences. Quite unpredictable, in addition of a dribble, from his left foot can come a deep through ball, a cross or a long shot that make it even harder for defences to confront.

But, why did Ancelotti let go this excellent player? According to my system, Di Maria’s only weakness is the consistency of his performances, when things are going good, he is very hard to stop, but he quite commonly has cloudy days, when practically none of his attacking plays come to a happy end.
