Thomas Vermaelen loses no 5 shirt as he edges towards Man United future

It has been widely reported that Manchester United need a centre-back and that a certain centre-back has been linked with that vacancy for some time. The biggest hint yet was dropped with new 19-year-old Arsenal signing Calum Chambers wearing the Arsenal captain’s number 5 shirt and the skipper being a no-show so far in pre-season.

Vermaelen has stayed behind in London to continue with treatment for a hamstring injury and it has so far not been explained why Chambers was effectively wearing the captains kit number at the training camp.

Chambers had his £16m transfer confirmed on Monday and joined up with Arsene Wenger and the squad at their training camp in Austria. Despite it being reported he would wear a No 21 he was photographed wearing the No 5, raising further questions over the future of Thomas Vermaelen.

Its no secret that Louis Van Gaal has had his eye on the Arsenal skipper and his keen to bring him to Old Trafford with the exits of both Ferdinand and Vidic. A report in the Express claims that their may be an exchange of players with Portugese international Nani being linked in that respect.

The 28-year-old Belgium defender joined Arsenal in 2009 from Ajax and has gone on to make 110 appearances and announced as captain after the departure of Robin van Persie to United. Expect talk of an exit to join van Persie to heat up over the coming days.
