Stuart McCall says Scotland could make changes for Georgia Euro 2016 qualifier

Scotland coach Stuart McCall has revealed there are still two or three places up for grabs for their Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia.

Manager Gordon Strachan has a number of options available to change his team following the 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland in June. Grant Hanley is in line for a return to central defence following injury, which could allow Charlie Mulgrew to move into midfield following his stint at centre-back in Dublin.

Steven Whittaker and Andy Robertson are pushing for the left-back slot and there are further decisions in midfield with Darren Fletcher back playing regularly at West Brom, and also up front, where Leigh Griffiths is pushing Steven Fletcher after netting eight goals for Celtic this season.

Strachan sprung some surprises in Dublin with Craig Forsyth and Matt Ritchie starting and Ikechi Anya on the bench, and there will be more debates with assistants Mark McGhee and McCall ahead of Friday's game in Tbilisi.

Both Scott Brown and Anya have shaken off knocks that saw them miss training on Monday, with fringe players Christophe Berra and Stuart Armstrong the only players to withdraw from the squad.

McCall said: "I think we probably have about eight or nine players there.

"There are one or two positions that might get changed. The good thing now is we have really good, strong options looking ahead."

Scotland face a five-hour flight home in the early hours of Saturday before taking on world champions Germany at Hampden on Monday, but that will not be taken into account when picking the team for the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena.

"The team will be selected solely on this one-off game," McCall said. "It's too big to start thinking about Germany.

"At the beginning of the campaign, I think anyone thought whatever you take off Germany would be a bonus. But it hasn't seemed to be the case now because they have had a little bit of a stutter.

"But first and foremost we go to Georgia, select a team we think we can win, and then coming back on the long journey we will look towards the Germany game."

Expectation levels are high among the Scotland support as Georgia have failed to take any points off Germany, Poland or the Republic. Dropped points from Germany against both Poland and the Irish have also added to the pressure on Scotland, despite their positive results so far.

The Poles have put eight goals past Georgia in two games but McCall has seen improvement since Kakhaber Tskhadadze took over as manager from former Dundee and Newcastle player Temuri Ketsbaia.

"We had a look back at their game against Poland where they got beat 4-0 in the last one," the former Motherwell and Rangers manager said. "But it wasn't until the 89th minute when Poland got their second. (Robert) Lewandowski got a hat-trick in 89, 91 and 93. In the last 10 minutes of that game Georgia could quite easily have got a draw.

"They are improving and even though we played well at Ibrox against them, we only managed to win 1-0 with an own goal, so it will be tight.

"I don't think there will be many goals in it, but as long as we get more than them then I'll be happy."

Scotland sit third in the table on 11 points, three behind Poland and two behind Germany, who play each other in Frankfurt later on Friday night.

McCall added: "Who knows, if we come back with a point, that could be a good point if we go and beat Poland. It's a game that we are looking to win - all our other rivals have been there and won. It's certainly the intention that we go there and be positive and hopefully get the three points.

"It would put us right up there. I would expect Ireland to win the next two games and probably go up to 15 points. But we have got to just focus on ourselves and hopefully we can come back to Monday night, a full house at Hampden and have a real go then."
