Manchester United step up their interest in PSV and Holland winger Memphis Depay.

PSV Eindhoven's technical director Marcel Brands has confirmed that Manchester United have made contact with PSV regarding their 21-year-old star who leads the Eredivisie scoring charts with 20 goals this season.

Depay helped the Netherlands finish third at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil before Louis van Gaal quit as head coach to take over at Manchester United. Van Gaal has continued to monitor his development since then.

“We have had a telephone call from them about him.” Brands said on Dutch television.

“But no talks have been held yet. There are several top clubs who have expressed an interest.” He added.

Brands said Depay would cost more than the 20 million euros (£14.4m), the figure Tottenham Hotspur reportedly bid last year for the player.

"It will be much higher than the offer from Tottenham Hotspur," Brands added. "He will be very expensive."

Depay is being heavily linked with a summer departure from PSV who clinched the Eredivisie title for the first time since 2008 after a 4-1 win over Heerenveen at the weekend in which the Dutch international scored from a spectacular free kick.

PSV coach Phillip Cocu told the media after Saturday's title triumph that he expected both Depay and midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum to leave.

Depay is one of a number of players that the Red Devils are looking at bringing in this summer with Louis van Gaal expected to spend a similar amount as last season. United assembled the most expensive squad in Premier League history by spending £150million last summer on the likes of Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and with Radamel Falcao also coming in on a loan deal.

Regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Europe, Depay has attracted the attention of many top clubs. However, United are thought to be in pole position to go on and complete the signing of the exciting prospect, despite keen interest from local rivals Manchester City and French big spenders Paris St-Germain.
