Newport wait on Scott Rigg fitness ahead of Grimsby game

Newport manager Graham Westley is waiting on the fitness of midfielder Scott Rigg before he names his starting line-up to face Grimsby in Sky Bet League Two.

Rigg is described as touch and go but could feature, although fellow midfielder and captain Scot Bennett is unlikely to feature before the weekend clash at Cambridge.

Maxime Blanchard played the full game in the goalless draw with leaders Doncaster on Friday and should retain his place but on-loan West Ham youngster Jaanai Gordon, an unused substitute against Doncaster, is likely to be on the bench again as Westley keeps faith with Ryan Bird, Aaron Williams and Craig Reid up front.

Josh Sheehan will hope to return to the starting line-up for the basement side following an ankle injury and defender Mickey Demetriou could get a place on the bench.

Grimsby boss Marcus Bignot will still be without three key players as the Mariners look to quickly bounce back from Saturday's humiliating 5-0 defeat at Crewe.

Luke Maxwell (groin), James Berrett (hip) and Dom Vose (leg) are all closing in on a return to full fitness but will definitely miss out once again for the trip to south Wales.

Otherwise Bignot has no fresh injury concerns but could look to make changes after apologising in person to the travelling fans following the loss at Gresty Road.

Akwase Asante,Tom Bolarinwa and Dan Jones are all pushing to start after coming off the bench at half-time in a vain bid to turn the tide at Crewe.
