Manchester United have been strongly linked with the Dortmund skipper for some time and reports in German newspaper Bild suggest an opening bid has now been lodged to bring the player to Old Trafford.

The report in Bild states that United have made a £21million bid for the 26-year-old with Dortmund hoping to do business at around the £32million mark so it seem some negotiation will take place.

Hummels is under contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2017 but the announcement of Jurgen Klopp that he will be stepping down at the end of the season will likely make the decision over personal terms somewhat easier for Hummels.

The centre back World Cup winner has spent his whole career in the Bundesliga but has said he would contemplate a move abroad when asked earlier in the season:

"I think moving abroad will be good for my professional and personal well-being,” said Hummels. “Eventually, I'd like to leave the Bundesliga.

The Dortmund player who spent his Youth and early professional career with Bayern Munich has had an injury plagued season making just 10 league appearances but seems to now be fully fit.

Hummels was shortlisted for the player of the tournament at the 2014 World Cup.
