Jamie Vardy in focus

Striker Jamie Vardy scored the vital opening goal - Leicester's first in the league in 2017 - and added the third in the 3-1 win over Liverpool in the Foxes' first match since Claudio Ranieri's sacking.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at how the England international fared:

WORK-RATE

A strong challenge on Sadio Mane in the opening minute left the winger limping, but Vardy escaped punishment and that set the tone for the night. The striker sprinted, tackled and harried from the front to great effect.

GOAL THREAT

Should have scored with a first-half volley which he mis-hit at goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, but his control from Kasper Schmeichel long kick was perfect. Took his first goal with the clinical efficiency of last season and his second was a classic striker's header nipping in front of the defender.

INFLUENCE

Gave makeshift centre-back Lucas Leiva a torrid time in the first half and left the Brazilian for dead for his goal. Vardy seemed to be the one rallying the troops on the pitch and his attitude, chasing down every lost cause, was leading from the front.

OVERALL

Vardy's performance was a catalyst for the team's display and was reminiscent of last season when he was so much more effective. His running gave Leicester something to aim for and an example to follow.
