Harry Redknapp hoping to give Rams the push they need

Harry Redknapp hopes to give Derby that little bit extra that finally sees them over the line in the race for promotion to the Barclays Premier League.

Redknapp was appointed as a 'football advisor' this week to work alongside Darren Wassall, the academy manager promoted to head coach for the remainder of the season following Paul Clement's sacking last month.

Derby have narrowly missed out on promotion from the Sky Bet Championship in the past two campaigns, first to Redknapp's QPR team in the 2014 play-off final before the capitulation under Steve McClaren during this stage last year.

Redknapp hopes he can help make a difference this time around, although the 69-year-old is adamant that all the final decisions rest with Wassall.

"He makes the decisions, he picks the team," said Redknapp.

"I'm around if he wants to run anything by me. I'm here for the short-term but I'm going to throw myself into it. If Darren wants my opinion then I'll give it to him. It's up to him at the end of the day if he wants to take what I say on board, he makes the final decisions.

"I'll be sat in the stand, I won't have a hotline to the dugout or anything like that. We'll chat after the game and I'll give my opinion on what I saw.

"If I can make one per cent difference to get this club promoted then I will be delighted. I'm just hoping while I'm here I can help tip the balance in our favour.

"This club should get promoted, everything is in place. The players have got to perform, they've been under-performing in the past couple of years, let's be honest."

Redknapp, who will take charge of the Jordan national team for two matches during the forthcoming international break, has been out of football since resigning as QPR boss in February 2015.

He said: "I've been watching football still and doing work for BT Sport but I'm glad to be back in the day-to-day. I had a buzz this morning getting up.

"I got a phone call at the weekend and just asked what was the situation with the manager. I was told Darren wanted me to come in and help out and be another pair of eyes for him, with a bit of experience.

"A few names were bandied about and Darren was happy with me. Hopefully he'll be manager here for many, many years. Hopefully while I'm here we can get this team in the Premier League. After that, who knows?

"I'm here for nine games, hopefully we can get up in those nine games. If not automatic then through the play-offs."

Asked if his role with Jordan would affect his commitment to Derby, Redknapp added: "No. It's just two games. It's during the break, I'll be back for the next (Derby) match.

"I shook hands with and made a deal with Prince Ali that I'd manage his country for him, I couldn't go back on it."
