England women put in a backs-to-the-wall performance as they earned a 0-0 friendly draw with Germany in Duisburg.

Mark Sampson's side survived an onslaught from their hosts, who spurned several good chances to win the rematch of the 2015 World Cup third-placed play-off.

After an even start, Germany's dominance began midway through the first half as Lionesses goalkeeper Karen Bardsley produced a fine save to keep her side level.

Felicitas Rauch raced through after a mistake by Lucy Bronze but Bardsley did superbly well to get down low and keep Rauch's effort out.

The hosts continued to create the better chances after the break and Babett Peter flashed an effort wide from a set piece before Melanie Leupolz tested Bardsley's handling from a corner.

Dzsenifer Marozsan was guilty of a glaring miss with 14 minutes remaining as she put her free header straight into the hands of a grateful Bardsley when the goal was gaping.

After soaked up all that pressure, England's hopes of sneaking a smash-and-grab win grew and they missed two chances in the final six minutes.

First Jill Scott scuffed a long-range shot when German goalkeeper Laura Benkarth out of position before Scott was again the guilty party at the death as she could not keep her effort from eight yards down as it ended goalless.
