Matt Busche The New American Road Race Champion

Matt Busche of Trek Factory Racing is the new American National Road Race champion.

The USA Cycling Professional Road Championship took place in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Memorial Day Monday and saw the riders take on a 111 miles (179.3km).course made up of 8.8km circuits and bigger 26.4km circuits.

A group of fifteen riders including new Time Trial Champion Andrew Talansky, Ted King, Tome Zirbel, Oscar Clarke, and Tyler Farrar were in a break which had a lead of 1.45 which went out to 2.15 as they took on the Lookout Mountain.

Tyler Farrar suffered a front chain ring mechanical and lost contact with those who were cresting the mountain. The nine out front were 2.45 ahead but were down to eight with a lead of thirty seconds over Marcotte and Rugg who were caught by the field with 85kms to go.

Talansky, who had five days off the bike after leaving the Tour Of California early shot away leaving the other seven which included McCabe,Clarke, Zwizanki, Zirbel, King, Magner and Anthony.

Scott Zwizanki and Anthony dropped off on the next climb up to Lookout Mountain, leaving the other five to chase down Talansky, who was 2.50 ahead of the peloton.

Clark and Zirbel went after Talansky but were unable to catch him and they were caught by the peloton.

Only fifteen riders were left when Chris Horner put in an attack to try and bring back Talansky and on the Kent Street hill climb for the final time, he caught up to him.

A crash took down three of the chasers, leaving six with a real chance of taking the win.

With one 8.7km lap to go in the pouring rain, Matt Busche was on the front before Joe Dombroski, Gavin Mannion and Busche launched an attack which was to see off the other three in Howes, Horner and Talansky.

Matt Busche of Trek Factory Racing and Joe Dombroski went head to head and Matt Busche went away to win in 4.35.21 ahead of Dombrosk of Cannodale-Garmin with Kiel Reijnen (United Healthcare) who punctured and stormed back to take the last place on the podium.

Busche not only wears the American Champion's jersey for a year but also gets a Sierre Nevada pale ale and a Volkswagen car,Megan Guarnier won the women's race.
