Dutch Police Call Off Protests At The Tour De France

A Dutch police union has called off its planned protests during the Tour De France which starts on Saturday.

The police who are demanding a 3.3% pay increase and had had planned to disrupt the individual time trial in Utrecht by riding the course.

However, after meeting with officials from the Utrecht municipal council, the trade union have called off their action.

Police in Utrecht and Rotterdam were desperately unhappy with the threat to the Tour in both Utrecht and when the races goes through Rotterdam on Sunday and Thomas Aling, spokesman of the National Police Unit told AD.nl that the action was "a bridge too far." and said " Of course it is important that a new collective agreement comes, but this action blows. This is not the right way and counterproductive."

Minister Van der Steur of Security and Justice and the Rotterdam Mayor Aboutaleb, were planning a preliminary injunction to prohibit the actions that had been announced by the police unions during the start of the Tour start and Aboutaleb said: "Like many Dutch, I have sympathy for the police officers who fight for a better collective agreement. But I do not think that that goal should be achieved in this way. ''
