Northants release South Africa's Hall

Northamptonshire will release former South Africa all-rounder Andrew Hall at the end of the season, the English county announced Tuesday.

The 39-year-old Hall joined Northamptonshire in 2007 -- the same year he played the last of his 21 Tests for South Africa.

Hall went on to captain the Midlands side from 2010-2012.

Although he has been a regular in relegation-threatened Northamptonshire's County Championship this season, Hall has played less of a role in limited-overs cricket.

Meanwhile off-spinning all-rounder Matthew Spriegel, who arrived at Wantage Road from Surrey in 2012 and played in every match of Northamptonshire's successful Twenty20 campaign the following year, will also be released.

"These are always difficult decisions to make regarding players futures, but they are always made in the best interests of moving the club forward over the next few years," said Northamptonshire chief executive David Smith.

"The club wishes to place on record its sincere thanks to both players for their commitment throughout what has been a difficult summer for everyone connected with Northants Cricket."
