India took full control of the first Test following a dramatic New Zealand collapse on day three in Kanpur.
Resuming on 152 for one, the Black Caps succumbed to spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, who took five for 73 and four for 93 respectively, as they were skittled for 262.
The tourists lost their remaining nine wickets for 103 runs, including their last five for just seven after lunch.
India then extended their 56-run first-innings lead to 215 by the close, half-centuries from Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara in an unbroken hundred partnership taking the score to 159 for one.
New Zealand's batting woes began in the first nine overs of the day when they lost Tom Latham, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor.
Latham was first to go, lbw prodding forward at Ashwin, who also bowled Williamson for 75 after Jadeja pinned Taylor on the crease second ball.
Luke Ronchi and Mitchell Santner provided some stern resistance, adding 49 for the fifth wicket, but that was as good as it got for the Black Caps.
Having survived a stumping chance on 32, Ronchi could only add six more before, attempting to sweep a full delivery, he was hit on the pad in front by Jadeja.
New Zealand then collapsed in the afternoon session as Santner edged Ashwin's first ball after the interval behind for 32 and Jadeja's 34th over brought three wickets.
Mark Craig, playing off the back foot, was pinned leg-before, Ish Sodhi went in similar fashion next delivery and, after keeping out the hat-trick ball, Trent Boult was caught at silly-point after inside-edging onto his boot.
BJ Watling was last man out, caught and bowled by Ashwin, before India built a platform and then upped the tempo after tea to continue their dominance.
Vijay and Lokesh Rahul added 52 for the opening wicket until the latter was caught at slip off Sodhi, but Vijay and Pujara saw their side through to the close unscathed.
