India collapsed to be all out for 444 and trail Australia by 73 runs in the opening Adelaide Test on Friday.

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon captured five for 134 to lead the way as India lost five wickets for 75 runs on the morning of the fourth day.

Lyon triggered the initial breakthrough with a brilliant catch off his own bowling to dismiss Rohit Sharma for 43 in the 11th over.

That dismissal exposed the Indian tail and Lyon and paceman Peter Siddle cleaned up the remaining wickets to give Australia 45 minutes' batting time through to lunch.

The Australians were in a strong position to press for victory over the final two days of the Test to go one-up in the four-match series.
