How the Australian wickets fell

29 July 2015 03:16

England took early control of the third Investec Test by bowling Australia out for 136 in 36.4 overs at Edgbaston, despite the tourists winning the toss and choosing to bat.

James Anderson was the chief destroyer with six for 47 while Steven Finn and Stuart Broad claimed two victims apiece.

Here Press Association Sport's Rory Dollard looks at how the wickets fell.

7/1 - Warner lbw Anderson 2

Anderson is on the money from the off, pitching one in line to the left-handed David Warner and clattering him high on the pad. A review merely confirms Warner is bang to rights.

18/2 - Smith c Cook b Finn 7

Finn announces his return from a two-year Test absence with a wonderful first over. He picks off prized scalp Steven Smith at the end of it, finding the ideal channel outside off stump and taking the edge to first slip.

34/3 - Clarke b Finn 10

A second major scalp for the returning Finn, who goes fast and full at Australia's struggling captain and shades the ball away slightly to topple off stump.

77/4 - Voges c Buttler b Anderson 16

A promising fourth-wicket partnership goes up in smoke as Adam Voges offers to play then belatedly withdraws his bat only to run a simple catch off the toe end.

82/5 - Marsh c Buttler b Anderson 0

Three for Anderson as Mitch Marsh unfurls a flashy but uncontrolled drive at an outswinger. Jos Buttler mops up again.

86/6 - Nevill b Anderson 2

A peach from England's spearhead, who finds just enough seam movement to clip the top of off stump while Peter Nevill plays a regrettable leave.

94/7 - Johnson c Stokes b Anderson 3

Five wickets for Anderson as he delights the Edgbaston crowd by taking out the panto villain. Nothing shot from Mitchell Johnson who prods to gully.

110/8 - Rogers lbw Broad 52

Broad opens his account by removing Australia's uncomfortable linchpin Chris Rogers. Round the wicket and speared into the back pad. DRS confirms the shout is a good one.

119/9 - Starc c Buttler b Broad 11

Mitchell Starc departs seemingly attempting to mimic Voges' exit. A comedy non-shot brings Broad a second success.

136 all out - Lyon b Anderson 11

Australia are put out of their misery as Anderson makes it six by cleaning up Nathan Lyon via an inside edge to leave Josh Hazelwood as the not out batsman.
