Gareth Batty admits to nerves on England Test return

Gareth Batty admitted returning to Test-match bowling for England was nerve-racking even for an "old fella" like him.

Conditions dictated veteran off-spinner Batty took the new ball on day two of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong, where the hosts closed on 221 for five in reply to England's 293 all out in an intriguingly-poised contest.

It was not until his third spell that 39-year-old Batty took his first Test wicket since June 2005, against the same opponents at Chester-le-Street, after fellow off-spinner Moeen Ali struck twice in his first over to put Bangladesh in apparent trouble just before lunch.

Batty told Sky Sports: "I was pretty nervous, I've got to be honest. It's what you dream about. Even for the old fellas like me, it was pretty nerve-racking.

"As the day went on, I hope I got into my spells a bit better and bowled fractionally better."

Yorkshireman Batty had received a new cap, to mark his eighth Test appearance, from former England captain Michael Atherton the previous day.

That will remain a memorable moment personally, more so if England can press on and go 1-0 up over the next three days.

"'Ath' awarded a cap yesterday, and I got quite emotional with that - so it was tough," said the Surrey captain.

As for England's performance with the ball so far, he added: "We had some really good points. I thought Mo's first introduction into the game was magnificent.

"They were jaffas, weren't they, that he got wickets with?

"Then we had periods of the game we could have held a bit better.

"Myself included - I should have maybe gone for 40 today instead of 50.

"It would have been a pretty good day then, on a pitch they batted well on."
