Skipper Faf du Plessis scored his first century in 17 innings to help South Africa take a stranglehold on the second Test against New Zealand at Supersport Park.

Du Plessis hit 112 not out to help his side to a total of 481 for eight before declaring and then seeing Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn strike early as the tourists were reduced to 38 for three by the close on day two.

Resuming at 283 for three, Du Plessis, who survived an early scare when Trent Boult very nearly removed his off-stump with the first ball of the day and was later dropped on 18, became the fifth batsman in South Africa's first innings to pass 50.

But unlike his predecessors, he pushed on to reach three figures, aided and abetted by all-rounder Stiaan van Zyl, who contributed 35 to a partnership of 84 before falling to Neil Wagner.

Pretoria-born medium pacer Wagner returned five for 86 from 39 overs with Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma and Philander his other victims.

The declaration left the Kiwis with 16 overs to see out, but after Philander and Steyn had sent openers Martin Guptill and Tom Latham back to the pavilion with just 13 on the board, Bavuma ran out Ross Taylor for one to leave them in disarray.
