England captain Alastair Cook, returning to the side after serving a one-match ban, elected to bowl in the fifth one-day international against Sri Lanka in Kandy on Wednesday.

After a brief shower, the game got under way on schedule although dark clouds were still hovering over the ground in central Sri Lanka.

England must win the game if they are to keep the series alive, with Sri Lanka holding a three-one lead in the seven-match series.

Sri Lanka included off-spinner Sachitra Senanayake, barely 24 hours after the International Cricket Council (ICC) lifted his ban for an illegal bowling action.

Senanayake was rushed to Kandy to replace main spinner Rangana Herath, who was injured during training on Tuesday.

England made two changes to their side, spinner James Tredwell replaced Ben Stokes while Cook returned at the expense of Alex Hales.
