De Villiers to miss series opener

South Africa one-day captain AB de Villiers will miss the forthcoming three-match series with Bangladesh after being handed a suspension for the opener.

The explosive batsman, ranked number one in the world by the International Cricket Council, had been deemed to have maintained a slow over-rate during the tense World Cup semi-final defeat to New Zealand, with the Kiwis triumphing off the penultimate ball.

As a result of his second over-rate offence in 12 months, he has been handed a one-match ban which will take effect for Friday's ODI against the Tigers in Mirpur.

The Proteas' management have therefore decided to rest De Villiers from the entire series with vice-captain and Test skipper Hashim Amla assuming leadership responsibilities.

South Africa coach Russell Domingo said: "AB's presence and contributions will be missed but we have a hectic playing schedule this season and we felt this would be a great opportunity to develop the next tier of batters during this series, like we are doing with our bowlers.

"We would also like to give him the peace of mind of being close to his wife with the imminent birth of his first born child."
