Dale Steyn rips through New Zealand order as South Africa seal victory

Dale Steyn took five for 33 as South Africa beat New Zealand by 204 runs in the second and final Test at Centurion to secure a 1-0 series victory.

Set 400 to secure an unlikely win after the hosts declared on 132 for seven on the fourth morning, the Black Caps' chances of claiming a positive result were in tatters when a fired-up Steyn reduced them to seven for four.

Tom Latham, Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor all departed for ducks and, despite 76 from Henry Nicholls, Steyn returned to wrap up the New Zealand innings for 195 during the final session on the penultimate day.

South Africa added 27 runs in 13 overs during the first hour, losing only Vernon Philander when he shouldered arms at Tim Southee, before calling time on their second innings to leave the tourists with the prospect of their highest successful Test chase.

But even a draw was out the equation when Latham played on to the opening ball of the innings, Guptill nicked his first ball to slip and Taylor was trapped lbw at the hands of Steyn.

To make matters worse for the Kiwis, skipper Kane Williamson slashed uncharacteristically outside off stump and edged Philander behind to Quinton de Kock, who took a superb one-handed diving catch to his right.

BJ Watling led a recovery of some sorts, adding 68 for the fifth wicket with Nicholls, but was sent back leg-before for 32 during off-spinner Dane Piedt's second over.

Steyn and Philander removed Mitchell Santner and Doug Bracewell, the latter for 30, before Kagiso Rabada struck twice and Steyn claimed his 26th Test five-wicket haul when Nicholls top-edged to deep fine-leg.
