Dale Steyn has been included in South Africa's World Twenty20 squad despite facing a race against time to be fit for next month's tournament in India.

The 32-year-old quick has not featured for the Proteas since bowling just 3.5 overs due to a shoulder injury sustained during the second innings of the Boxing Day Test against England.

Cricket South Africa have included Steyn in their 15-man squad, who will contest two T20 Internationals against England next week before heading to the sub-continent, subject to him proving his fitness.

Aaron Phangiso has been preferred to Eddie Leia as the second spinner, while Hasim Amla and Quinton de Kock, whose centuries saw South Africa home comfortably against England in the third ODI on Tuesday, are also involved.

Proteas captain Faf du Plessis hopes to end his country's long wait to win an ICC trophy, saying: "The ICC World T20 is the competition that we have been working towards over the last 18 months.

"We have had disappointments in the past and this year is another great opportunity for us to lift that elusive ICC trophy.

"We have been playing together as a squad for some time now and are really hungry and motivated to put in the performances to bring us success."
