Afghanistan survive late wobble to secure shock win over Bangladesh

Bangladesh suffered a shock two-wicket defeat as Afghanistan levelled the one-day international series at 1-1 in a thrilling match in Dhaka.

The hosts were restricted to 208 all out, and then a fifth-wicket stand of 107 between Asghar Stanikzai (57) and Mohammad Nabi appeared to put Afghanistan on course for a comfortable win.

Bangladesh had a late fightback in store, led by Shakib al Hasan (four for 47) and debutant Mosaddek Hossain with two wickets to add to his run-a-ball 45.

Afghanistan were still able to finish the job with two balls to spare, however, when number 10 Dawlat Zadran carved his first delivery over point for four off the expensive Taskin Ahmed.

Afghanistan had previously beaten only Bangladesh, once, and Zimbabwe six times among all Test-playing nations - but Stanikzai's team have given themselves a chance of series success in Saturday's decider at the same venue.

Bangladesh, who will be in action against England in both ODI and then Test series next month, suffered a major mid-innings wobble after being put in.

Following two wickets in two balls for teenage leg-spinner Rashid Khan (three for 35), both lbw, the hosts were nine down in the 43rd over - having found it tough especially against the off-breaks of Nabi, who conceded only 16 runs in his 10 overs.

Bangladesh faltered badly from 111 for two, and even Hossain's last-wicket stand of 43 with his namesake Rubel was not enough to secure a defendable total.
