Tottenham Complete Signing of Joe Rodon From Swansea

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Welsh centre-back Joe Rodon on a permanent basis.

Spurs boss José Mourinho was keen to add a new defender to his ranks this summer but found striking a deal for some of his top targets easier said than done.

Talks with Inter over Milan Škriniar broke down, Rúben Dias joined Manchester City and negotiations with Chelsea over Antonio Rüdiger never really got going, which prompted a move for Rodon shortly before the closure of the global transfer window on 5th October.

With the EFL deadline not until Friday, Spurs and Swansea took their time to agree a deal which was right for everyone, and Spurs have now confirmed that Rodon will join up with the team in the near future.

The 22-year-old leaves Swansea having made 54 appearances for the senior side after coming through the academy at the Liberty Stadium.

His form in Swansea attracted plenty of praise and even earned him a call-up to Ryan Giggs' Wales squad. Rodon made his international debut in September 2019 and has since earned a further six caps, including an appearance in the recent 3-0 loss to England.

He is now expected to compete with Davinson Sánchez, Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld for minutes at the heart of Spurs' defence, although he will not be eligible for the Europa League after missing out on the squad registration deadline.

Mourinho has previously expressed his delight at Spurs' transfer business this summer. The club have brought in no less than seven new players, while also making midfielder Giovani Lo Celso's loan at the club permanent.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Matt Doherty, Joe Hart, Carlos Vinícius and Sergio Reguilón have all joined on a permanent basis, while Welsh winger Gareth Bale completed an emotional return to the club on loan from Real Madrid.
