Stay or Go? Deciding Which Players Everton Should Keep & Offload This Summer

01 August 2020 12:31

Everton's rollercoaster of a season is finally over, after a terrible start Marco Silva was sacked and replaced by Carlo Ancelotti.

They ended up finishing 12th but Ancelotti will have much higher hopes for next year, and will be expecting to push for European football.

Here's a look at every first-team player at Goodison Park and whether they should stay or go this summer.

Goalkeepers

England's number 1 has had a wobbly season to say the least.

Jordan Pickford (STAY) - England's number one should definitely stay at Everton. He's had a difficult season this year but he's worth sticking by.

Jonas Lössl (GO) - The Dane has been back on loan at Huddersfield for the second half of the season and you can't see him getting much of a chance next year. Might be worth signing an alternative to play back up to Pickford.

Joao Virginia (GO on loan) - He had an awful loan spell at Reading, but he is still only 20 so he shouldn't be written off. A loan move next year seems the best move for both parties.

Centre-Backs

Branthwaite has burst into the team since the restart.

Michael Keane (STAY) - The Englishman has struggled since his big-money move to Everton, but he is still their main centre-back and has looked more composed recently. Keane could potentially form a solid long-term partnership with young centre back Jarrad Branthwaite.

Yerry Mina (GO) - Mina has been a poor signing. He has never looked the same in an Everton shirt as he does in a Colombia one. The Blues should try to recoup some of what the paid for him this summer.

Mason Holgate (STAY) - It has been a really important season for Mason Holgate, who has seen himself handed a number of opportunities in the first team. He'll be hoping to continue his development next season.

Jarrad Branthwaite (STAY) - The Cumbrian teenager has had a breakout season and has looked like a seasoned pro for Ancelotti's team. He'll be a fixture of this side for years to come.

Matthew Pennington (GO) - The 21 year-old has had a poor year on loan at Hull and he won't have convinced anyone that he should stay next year.

Full-Backs

Baines announced his retirement at the end of the season.

Leighton Baines (GONE) - The Everton legend announced his retirement at the end of the season after 13 years at the club.

Lucas Digne (STAY) - Digne is one of a few real quality players in the Everton side.

Seamus Coleman (STAY) - The Irishman is one of the best value signings in Premier League history, and now Everton's captain.

Jonjoe Kenny (STAY) - After a season-long loan at Schalke, Kenny will return with expectations to be involved to some extent for Everton next season.

Central Midfielders

Gomes picked up a horror injury early in the season.

Andre Gomes (STAY) - The Portuguese midfielder started the season well, but then suffered a terrible injury. He has struggled to rediscover his form from before then, but the speed in which he returned was quite remarkable.

Jean-Philippe Gbamin (STAY) - If and when Gbamin ever plays for Everton, it will feel like a new signing. The Ivorian has been out injured all season - especially frustrating because the Toffees spent £25m on him.

Tom Davies (STAY) - Davies has had another indifferent year. Will be hoping to convince the Everton faithful that he has what it takes to play regularly for the Blues.

Fabian Delph (STAY) - The midfielder is a real leader in Everton's dressing room and they have missed him dearly since his injury.

Beni Baningime (GO) - The Congolese midfielder should have forced his way into the team by now but he has never really done that. He had an unsuccessful loan move to Wigan and should be offloaded this summer.

Muhamed Besic (GO) - Besic has barely played on loan at Sheffield United and Everton could sell him this summer.

Attacking Midfielders

Sigurdsson has had another underwhelming season.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (GO) - Sigurdsson has had an underwhelming season, and considering he doesn't fit into Ancelotti's favoured 4-4-2 formation, it would make sense to offload him. Needs a team built around him and isn't good enough to warrant that status in a team with aspirations like this.

Alex Iwobi (STAY) - The ex-Arsenal man has had a poor season, but Everton spent £40m on the Nigerian and they won't want to cut their losses just yet. He clearly has a lot of talent - something which Ancelotti desperately needs to get out of him.

Anthony Gordon (STAY) - Breaking into the team at the end of the season, Gordon will be looking forward to a first season fully established in the Everton team.

Bernard (GO) - The Brazilian has never convinced since joining Everton, and at 27 the Toffees should be able to get a decent fee for him in a non-coronavirus market. Whether they can now remains to be seen.

Yannick Bolasie (GO) - Bolasie has disappointed on loan at Sporting this season, he won't feature in Ancelotti's plans next year.

Forwards

Richarlison has had an impressive season for Everton.

Richarlison (STAY) - The Brazilian is a terrific player and has cemented himself as Everton's key man this season. He will be vital if they are to push back into the European places.

Theo Walcott (GO) - Walcott is not the player he once was. He has lost his pace and his effectiveness with it. Everton should sell him.

Moise Kean (STAY) - There was excitement when the Italian signed last summer, but his first season in English football has been poor. He still has a very bright future though and Ancelotti will look to get more out of him next season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (STAY) - Calvert-Lewin has had a wonderful season for Everton and he will have done a lot to convince the Everton faithful that he is the man to lead the line for them.

Cenk Tosun (GO) - Tosun's loan at Crystal Palace was cut short due to injury and that wouldn't have done much to save his Everton career. His time on Merseyside is almost certainly up.

Sandro Ramirez (GO) - His move to Everton has been nothing short of a disaster. Only scored three goals on loan at Real Valladolid this year and he'll be out of the door come the summer.
