Huddersfield Town are said to be lining up a January move for Doncaster Rovers captain Ben Whiteman, as the Terriers look to reshape their squad and climb the Championship table in the second half of the season.
It's been a difficult start to life back in the Championship for the Yorkshire side following their relegation last season, and a rocky opening to the campaign saw Jan Siewert lose his job in September.
In his place came Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley, who has since struggled to get a tune out of the squad left behind by the German. They have won just four of Cowley's 16 games in charge, and Huddersfield sit only four points clear of the relegation zone, having lost both of their games prior to his arrival.
As such, it is clear to see why reports have the new boss looking to new talent ahead of his first transfer window in charge. He has previously spoken of a 'lack of balance' to the squad, and though the budget may not be there for a complete squad overhaul, it certainly seems we can expect some movement.
To that end, a recent story from Football Insider claims that they are looking at a deal for Doncaster Rovers midfielder Ben Whiteman, who captains the League One club at just 23 years of age.
Whiteman has featured for Rovers for the past two seasons, joining initially on loan from Sheffield United at the beginning of the 2017/18 season before making the move permanent in January 2018.
He has been one of the stars of an indifferent season so far, playing every minute at the heart of midfield as they sit 14th in the league - albeit with two or three games in hand on the teams above them.
It does seem as if Whiteman would fill an important void in Cowley's squad. Central midfield experience is sorely lacking, with only Jonathan Hogg, Juninho Bacuna and Chelsea loanee Trevoh Chalobah as established options in the position.
It would come as no surprise, then, to see them move for him, but he isn't likely to come cheap. He's tied to Doncaster until 2023, and as one of their prized assets, it's likely the Terriers would have to cough up to secure his signing.
