Chelsea Keen to Extend Thiago Silva's Stay at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are set to open negotiations with veteran centre-back Thiago Silva about extending the Brazilian's stay at Stamford Bridge after his impressive start to the season.

Silva joined Chelsea on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain during the summer, signing a 12-month contract with the option for a further year if both parties agreed to trigger it.

He might have only played nine games for his new side, but according to Sky Sports, Chelsea have already been so impressed with Silva's impact that they are already planning to extend his contract.

Manager Frank Lampard believes the 36-year-old has been an integral part of Chelsea's transformation into one of the Premier League's meanest defences, and the boss is in no rush to part ways with the experienced defender.

Talks between Silva and the club are not expected to begin until early 2021, but Lampard will make it clear that he wants the centre-back to stay for at least another 12 months.

However, Silva's stay is not expected to impact Chelsea's transfer plans. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues are looking to add a young, experienced centre-back to their squad next summer as they prepare for Silva's eventual exit.

One potential target is Atletico Madrid's Jose Gimenez. The 25-year-old was on Chelsea's radar last summer but was quickly forgotten about because of his £108m release clause, which was well out of Chelsea's reach during their hectic window.

Gimenez is the only player suggested, but Romano made it clear that the Uruguay international wasn't necessarily Chelsea's top target, but rather simply a player that the Blues are known to like.

In the meantime, Lampard will continue to put all his faith in Silva, whose experience and leadership has led Chelsea on a ten-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

In Silva's nine appearances, the Blues have conceded just five goals, three of which came in the 3-3 draw with West Bromwich Albion on the defender's shaky debut.
