Chelsea Awarded 2019/20 WSL Title on Points Per Game Basis as Liverpool Relegated

The FA have announced that the 2019/20 Women’s Super League title has been handled to Chelsea on a ‘basic points per game’ basis, while Liverpool have been relegated on the same principle and will compete in the Women’s Championship next season instead.

The second tier title has been awarded to Aston Villa, who will be promoted to the WSL for 2020/21.

Last week, the decision was made to cancel the remainder of the 2019/20 WSL and Women’s Championship season as a result of the difficulties that would be faced trying to restart it.

An FA statement on the decision to now decide the season on points per game read: “All decisions were made and finalised by our Board – and were based on the most appropriate sporting outcome for the 2019/20 season.

“The Board considered and analysed all of the recommendations made to them by the FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship Board, which were collated after full and thorough consultation process with the clubs.”

Chelsea actually trailed leaders Manchester City by a point in second place when women’s football was brought to a halt by the coronavirus crisis. But the Blues, for whom this is now a third title in the space of five seasons – in addition to their 2017 Spring Series triumph – had a game in hand that pushed their average points per game tally higher than their rivals’.

Liverpool had managed only a single win in 14 WSL games this season, with three draws taking their points tally to six. The club has been heavily criticised by members of the women’s football community for a lack of investment and funding at a time when the men’s team is flying.

A number of Liverpool players have already confirmed their departures ahead of next season.

For Aston Villa, 2020/21 will mark a first ever WSL campaign for the club.

Lower level women’s football from tier three to tier seven had already been declared null and void and all results from this season expunged. As a result of that, there will be no promotion from the third tier, nor will there be any relegation from the Championship.
