Swiss eighth seed Stanislas Wawrinka downed Tommy Robredo in straight sets to set up a quarter-final with Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open on Sunday.

Wawrinka, who lost to Djokovic in a titanic fourth round duel in five sets last year, beat the Spanish 17th seed 6-3, 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/5) in two hours and 23 minutes in a night match on Rod Laver Arena.

Wawrinka was hot on serve, winning 90 percent of his first serve points and throwing down 14 aces. He had two service breaks to have the edge on Robredo.

The Swiss hit a total of 57 winners and 27 unforced errors and kept his nerve in two tiebreakers to take the match.

"I think the serve was really good today," he said. "I feel really good and I haven't had too many matches before today.

"I had one walkover and my first opponent pulled out after the first set, so it was good to have a tough match today against Tommy and really happy to get through."
