Former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone was a surprise casualty in the first round of the Claro Open Colsanitas after being beaten in straight sets by unseeded Brazilian Teliana Pereira in Bogota.

Fourth seed Schiavone, whose only major title came at Roland Garros five years ago, rallied briefly in the second set but the Italian ultimately slumped to a 6-1 6-4 defeat in the Colombian capital.

Ajla Tomljanovic, the third seed, followed Schiavone in being ousted at the first hurdle after the Croatian was beaten handily 6-4 6-1 by Russia's Alexandra Panova.

Second seed Monica Puig fared much better, with the Puerto Rican coming through 6-2 6-3 against Dutch qualifier Cindy Burger.

Yaroslava Shvedova and Irina Falconi, seeded fifth and eighth respectively, also progressed to the second round but seventh seed Timea Babos was dumped out.

There were also victories for Nicole Gibbs, Danka Kovinic, Mandy Minella and Sachia Vickery.
