Raonic forced out of French Open

World number six Milos Raonic has withdrawn from the French Open after failing to overcome a foot injury.

Raonic first felt the problem at the Monte Carlo Masters in April, when he was forced to retire from a quarter-final match against Tomas Berdych.

The 24-year-old carried the injury through the Madrid Open where he lost to Andy Murray in the last eight, but subsequently missed the Rome Masters last week to undergo surgery.

The condition in his right foot is known as Morton's neuroma, which usually involves the thickening of tissue around one of the nerves leading to the toe.

"I am sad to have to unfortunately announce my withdrawal from 2015's Roland Garros," Raonic said.

"I tried my best to be back on court and healthy in time after surgery but after consulting with my team and doctors, I made a decision to withdraw from this year's tournament and make sure I am able to return return to the court at one hundred percent.

"My rehab will continue this week and I will shortly begin preparations for a strong Queen's Club and Wimbledon."

Raonic achieved his best performance at Roland Garros last year, reaching the quarter-finals before losing in straight sets to Novak Djokovic.

The Canadian's withdrawal means nine-time champion Rafael Nadal is likely to move up from seventh to sixth seed, in line with the current ATP world rankings.

The draw for the French Open is on Friday and play begins on Sunday.
