Rafael Nadal gained revenge on Fabio Fognini for his shock US Open defeat by beating the Italian in straight sets to reach the final of the China Open in Beijing.

The Spaniard, seeded three, who threw away a two-set lead to lost to Fognini at Flushing Meadows, claimed a 7-5 6-3 win in a match featuring six breaks of serve, five in the first set alone.

The crucial break in the first set came as Fognini served to stay alive at 5-6, while Nadal broke decisively for a 4-2 advantage in the second as he went on to close out victory.

In the women's draw, sixth seed Ana Ivanovic crashed out at the last-four stage as she surrendered a one-set lead to lose 5-7 6-4 6-1 to Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky in two hours and 20 minutes.

Bacsinszky took only one of eight break chances in the first set, but was more ruthless for the rest of the match, converting three break points in each of the last two sets to seal the win.
