Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal were among the top seeds to survive a noticeable thinning of the pack at the Rogers Cup on Wednesday.

The British number one - eager to replace Roger Federer as world number two by reaching the final here - encountered few problems in completing his rain-delayed match against Tommy Robredo, with a 6-4 7-5 victory in Montreal pitting him against Gilles Muller in the third round.

Muller, Luxembourg's world number 46, needed three sets to down Gael Monfils 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7/4).

Spanish seventh seed Nadal had earlier dispatched Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 while Kei Nishikori is now preparing for a showdown with David Goffin - a 6-4 6-4 victor against Sam Querrey - after defeating Pablo Andujar 6-3 6-3.

Nadal told atpworldtour.com: "I think it was a good match. Only one bad game in the whole match, at 5-4 on my serve in the first set.

"The rest was a positive match, I think.

"The conditions were not easy today. A lot of wind against a player who doesn't want to play a lot of points from the baseline, so I tried to play the points shorter, going to the net, playing with the slice.

"He was not an easy opponent to start against."

US Open champion Marin Cilic and Tomas Berdych are both heading home following their respective losses to Bernard Tomic and Donald Young.

Jack Sock's reward for ousting 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov 5-7 7-6 (7/5) 7-5 is a meeting with top seed Novak Djokovic, while Mikhail Youzhny and Jeremy Chardy won their matches against Gilles Simon and Leonardo Mayer to progress.

Qualifier Ernests Gulbis pulled off a 6-2 5-7 6-3 triumph over Lukas Rosol and will next face Berdych's conqueror Young.
