Home favourite Andreea Mitu provided the biggest cheer of the day at the BRD Bucharest Open by fighting back from a set down to defeat eighth seeded German Annika Beck.
Mitu, 23, ranked 78t h in the world, was swept aside in the first set but stormed back against an opponent ranked seven places higher to win 1-6 6-3 6-3 in just under two hours.
Monica Niculescu came through a tough first-round challenge in an all-Romanian affair to win through in three sets against Ana Bogdan.
Third seed Niculescu, 41st in the world, eventually came through 6-2 5-7 6-2 against younger opponent Bogdan, ranked outside the top 200, in just under three hours.
Israeli Shahar Peer recovered from a set down as she outfought Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 2-6 6-4 6-4, while s eventh seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova needed less than 50 minutes to see off Hungary's Reca-Luca Jani 6-1 6-2.
There were also wins for Denisa Allvertova, Aleksandra Krunic and Danka Kovinic.
