Second seed Karolina Pliskova needed less than an hour as she launched her Miami Open campaign with a straight-sets win over Madison Brengle.

The Czech saw off the American in 59 minutes with a 6-1 6-3 triumph.

"It was a tough one today against an American, she has the home crowd supporting here. So I'm just happy to be through," Pliskova told reporters after the game.

Dominika Cibulkova had few issues with qualifier Veronica Cepede Royg as the fourth seed advanced with a 6-3 6-2 win.

"It was my first match here, so it was pretty hot and it wasn't easy conditions. But I made it through. I'd never played her before, so that's always a new experience. I'm glad I got the job done," she said.

Agnieszka Radwanska, the 2012 champion, came through a tough test against Wang Qiang 7-6 (7/3) 6-1.

Caroline Wozniacki breezed past American qualifier Varvara Lepchekno 6-1 6-2 and number 26 seed Mirjana Lucic-Baroni beat Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 2-6 7-6 (7/2).

Fellow seeds Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Yulia Putintseva and Shuai Zhang also progressed.

But it was not all plain sailing for the seeds as ninth seed Elina Svitolina, number 23 seed Daria Gavrilova and 29th-seeded Ana Konjuh crashed out.

Svitolina suffered a surprise 7-5 6-4 defeat against American wildcard Bethanie Mattek-Sands, while Gavrilova was beaten 6-2 6-2 by Lucie Safarova and Kirsten Flipkens got the better of Konjuh with a 7-6 (7/4) 6-7 (6/8) 6-2 triumph.

Home hope Coco Vandeweghe was another seed to suffer after going down 6-2 3-6 6-1 to Slovakian qualifier Jana Cepelova.
