Jo-Wilfried Tsonga humbled by world number 338 Thiago Monteiro in Rio

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga suffered a shock defeat in the Rio Open as he lost in three sets to world number 338 Thiago Monteiro.

Tsonga, third seed and ranked ninth in the world, was beaten 6-3 3-6 6-4 by the Brazilian, who was playing his first ever ATP World Tour singles match.

Fifth-seed Dominic Thiem enjoyed a less eventful day, easing past Argentinian Diego Schwartzman 7-5 7-5 while seventh seed Fabio Fognini was forced to retire when a set up against Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver due to an intercostal injury.

The wet weather in Rio wiped out the evening schedule, with David Ferrer's second-round match with Albert Ramos-Vinolas put back to Thursday.
