Jerzy Janowicz took his revenge on Lukas Rosol as Tuesday night's rematch of the 2014 Winston-Salem Open final saw the tables turned, while a number of high seeds were knocked out at the second-round stage.

Janowicz raced to a 6-3 6-2 win in 70 minutes, firing nine aces, to see off the man who beat him to the title here a year ago.

"I lost after having match points exactly one year ago, so this was an important match for me today," Janowicz said on the ATP website.

"I'm playing very good tennis now so I'm happy. I feel really good. Last week (in Cincinnati) I played really decent tennis, but I'm avoiding mistakes."

The victory set up a third-round meeting with second seed Kevin Anderson, who rallied to beat Mikhail Kukushkin 4-6 6-2 6-3.

Top seed Gilles Simon joined number four Viktor Troicki, number five Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and seventh seed Sam Querrey in losing out.

Simon was beaten 6-7 (5/7) 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (8/6) by Aljaz Bedene in a contest which lasted just shy of three hours, while Troicki went down 6-4 4-6 6-4 against Malek Jaziri.

Garcia-Lopez was defeated in straight sets by Yen-Hsun Lu, 6-3 6-3, while Querrey lost 7-6 (9/7) 6-7 (4/7) 7-6 (11/9) to Simone Bolelli.

Number three Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had to rally to avoid a similar fate, coming back to beat Denis Istomin 5-7 6-4 6-1.

Number six Thomaz Bellucci was also given a workout in beating qualifier Frances Tiafoe 6-3 2-6 7-6 (7/2).

Qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert saw off 14th seed Marcos Baghdatis 6-3 2-6 7-5, while ninth seed Benoit Paire was toppled 6-1 6-4 by Hyeon Chung and number 10 Joao Sousa was beaten 6-4 6-4 by Pablo Carreno Busta.

Steve Johnson battled past Sam Groth 6-4 6-7 (4/7) 6-1, 11th seed Jiri Vesely overcame qualifier Martin Klizan 6-3 6-4, and number 15 Teymuraz Gabashvili was a 7-6 (7/5) 6-7 (5/7) 7-6 (7/3) winner over Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Pablo Andujar, seeded 12, was beaten 4-6 7-5 7-5 by Diego Schwartzman.
