Former world number four, Jelena Dokic, has made an unsuccessful return to competitive tennis, losing 6-2, 6-4 to fellow Australian Jarmila Gajdosova in the first round of the Australian Open playoff in Melbourne.

30-year-old Dokic has been sidelined with a wrist injury for more than a year-and-a-half.

Gajdosova broke Dokic's serve in the first and seventh game of the match before clinching the opening set.

Dokic started the second set well, breaking Gajdosova to lead 3-1.

But Gajdosova immediately broke back, before claiming victory in around an hour.

The male and female playoff tournament winners will receive a wildcard for next month's Australian Open.
