French number two seed Alize Cornet crashed out of the quarter-finals of the Guangzhou Open in southern China on Thursday, losing to her unseeded opponent.
Austrian Yvonne Meusburger beat Cornet 6-4, 6-1 in a match lasting just under two hours, to book herself a place in the semi-finals.
Vania King of the US won a clash with Puerto Rican Monica Puig 1-6, 7-5, 7-6.
Meanwhile, China's Zhang Shuai enjoyed a comfortable 7-5, 6-3 victory over Briton Johanna Konta.
Also on Thursday Britain's Laura Robson, the number three seed, faced Jie Zheng of China.
The two players were equal at a set apiece and each had won six games in a third set before their set point match was suspended due to rain.
Reigning Guangzhou Open champion Hsieh Su-Wei of Taiwan failed to make the quarter-finals at this year's event, crashing out Wednesday to an unseeded opponent.
The Guangzhou International Women's Open, which offers $500,000 in prize money, was first staged in 2004.
