Ernests Gulbis beats wildcard to set up clash with top seed Richard Gasquet

Latvian Ernests Gulbis secured a second-round clash against top seed Richard Gasquet at the Open Sud de France following a straight-sets win over wildcard Quentin Halys in Montpellier.

The 27-year-old world number 82 delivered the key service breaks to progress 6-4 6-3 against the 19-year-old, who was knocked out of the Australian Open in round two by eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

German qualifier Dustin Brown beat Belgium's Steve Darcis 7-5 7-5 to secure a showdown with third seed Gilles Simon, who like fellow Frenchman Gasquet had also been handed a bye into the last 16.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, there were defeats for the sixth seed Joao Sousa, who lost against Belgian Ruben Bemelmans 4-6 6-3 4-6, while German Michael Berrer defeated number seven seed Borna Coric of Croatia 7-6 (7/5) 6-2.

Veteran Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, 34, reached the second round when he coasted past 19-year-old Swedish qualifier Elias Ymer 6-1 6-4.
