Juan Martin del Potro recently revealed an email he sent to the head of the federation, as well as Davis Cup captain Martin Jaite, calling them out for using the Argentinian press against him and confirming that he will not be playing in next year’s first round Davis Cup tie against Italy in Argentina.
“I am tired that you invite me [to play Davis Cup] by email or messages and that, at the same time, you put pressure on me through some media, publishing articles on whether or not I will play Davis Cup, trying to make me look bad in the public eye, which to me appears a hypocritical double speech,” del Potro wrote.
Del Potro also aired his grievances about how he was treated on the team. Typically players, especially top players, are included in the decision making process, but del Potro feels he’s been squeezed out.
“I have never been consulted in the choice of captain, surfaces, locations, etc.,” he wrote, “and when you did it, for instance for the tie against the Czech Republic in 2012, you did not take my opinion into account.”
Despite all their years of talent, Argentina has never won the Davis Cup, finishing as the runner-up in 1981, 2006, 2008, and 2011. With Davis Cup stalwart David Nalbandian retired, Argentina’s hopes for the trophy lay almost entirely on del Potro.
